Meet Chef David
Culinary Arts InstructorÂ
David's approach to the kitchen is rooted in one simple belief: everyone belongs here. With the heart of an educator, the curiosity of a lifelong learner, and a deep love for the craft, he creates a space where first-timers and seasoned home cooks alike feel equally at home. Whether guiding someone through their very first knife cuts or helping an experienced cook push past their comfort zone, David meets every guest where they are, with patience, warmth, and a genuine enthusiasm for the shared adventure of cooking. Food, he believes, is one of the most powerful ways we connect with one another, and every class is an invitation to explore that together.
Early Years & Culinary Roots
David grew up immersed in the rich food traditions of his Mexican heritage, where the kitchen was never just a place to cook; it was the heart of the home. The aromas of slow-simmered salsas, hand-pressed tortillas, and generations-old family recipes were inseparable from family gatherings, celebrations, and the everyday rhythms of life. That deeply rooted relationship with Mexican culinary tradition, full of bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and the belief that food is an expression of love and identity, laid the foundation for everything that followed. A Southern California native, David has spent decades serving communities across the region, and his love for bringing people together around shared experiences has always found its way back to the table.
Education & Culinary Expertise
David's formal culinary training gave structure and precision to a lifelong passion, deepening his appreciation for technique, ingredient integrity, and the cultural stories embedded in every dish. He holds an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts, a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership, and two professional teaching credentials, one in Special Education and one in Culinary Arts, a combination that reflects both his commitment to the craft and his belief that great teaching is every bit as important as great cooking. Together, these foundations shape an approach to the kitchen that is as thoughtful as it is skilled, grounded in how people learn, grow, and thrive together.
Professional Experience & Teaching
David's culinary career spans some of Southern California's most respected kitchens and institutions. He has led cooking classes at Sur La Table in South Coast Plaza, worked at the acclaimed Pizzeria Mozza in Newport Beach, and has partnered with the Los Alamitos Educational Foundation (LAEF) to bring educational culinary programming to students and families within the Los Alamitos Unified School District. Currently, he serves as a full-time high school Culinary Arts Teacher within Long Beach Unified School District, bringing the same hands-on, confidence-building energy to the next generation of cooks and chefs every day. Beyond the classroom, David is an accomplished private chef and caterer, having designed and executed menus for intimate dinner parties, bridal showers, anniversary celebrations, and more; events known for the warmth and attention to detail that only comes from someone who genuinely loves feeding people well. Fluent in both English and Spanish, he connects naturally with guests of all backgrounds, and his ability to communicate complex ideas in accessible, engaging ways makes every class feel like a conversation rather than a lecture.
